Abdul Rahman Pelawa Pembangkang Sumbang Idea

KANGAR: Menteri Kesejahteraan Bandar, Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan Datuk Abdul Rahman Dahlan Selasa mempelawa pakatan pembangkang menyumbang idea bagi menangani isu berkaitan kementeriannya.

Beliau berkata mereka boleh duduk bersamanya tanpa komitmen rasmi untuk bersama-sama mencari jalan mengatasi isu berbangkit, tanpa perlu berbahas di Parlimen.

"Elakkan Parlimen jadi tempat percakaran.

Blame Yourself For Defeat

GEORGE TOWN: Pakatan Rakyat lost the recent general election because its campaign strategy was faulty, not because it was the victim of fraud, according to the Malaysian Election Observers Network (Meonet).

Meonet Chief, Ong Boon Keong said today that his organisation’s ground study found Pakatan did not have an effective strategy to penetrate Barisan Nasional’s rural vote bank, especially in Sabah and Sarawak.

He noted that virtually all of Pakatan’s claims of fraud involved urban constituencies, where it was more successful than BN.

“Strategically, Pakatan’s claim that fraud robbed it of victory is misplaced,” Ong told FMT.

Meonet’s team of volunteers monitored the election in Sabah and Sarawak.

Ong said BN effectively engaged the local chieftains and power brokers in the two states to secure the rural votes. He urged Pakatan to take a good look at its own campaign strategy, saying it would not be able to take over Putrajaya until it could penetrate BN’s rural vote bank.

Meanwhile, Communications and Multimedia Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek has described the Pakatan protest rallies as a “crazy fiesta” held by disenchanted groups who could not accept defeat. A total 11,054,577 votes were recorded for the parliament contest in the May 5 election.

Pakatan garnered 5,623,984 of the popular votes (60%) against BN’s 5,237,699 (47.4%), and leaders of the opposition alliance have been citing these figures to claim that they were the rightful victors.

The three parties in Pakatan collectively won 88 parliament seats against BN’s 133. Pakatan-friendly PSM won the Sungai Siput seat to make it 89 for the opposition.

What the Pakatan leaders have not highlighted is that Umno won the most popular votes among individual parties. Umno secured 29.3% popular votes and won 88 federal seats, leaving the second biggest party, DAP, far behind with 15.7% and 38 seats.

Penang Gerakan leader Baljit Singh has called on opposition leaders to accept their defeat gracefully. Using the analogy of a football match, he said the opposition should realise that the team that scored more goals would win a match, not the team with the most fans in the stadium.

“Likewise, under the country’s first-past-the-pole election system, a party needs to win more seats, not just popular votes, to triumph,” said Baljit.

Dalang Pencerobohan Lahad Datu Tidak Akan Didedah

Turut hadir, Timbalan Menteri Dalam Negeri Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, Ketua Setiausaha Kementerian Dalam Negeri Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Mohamad Radzi dan Ketua Polis Negara Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar.

Ahmad Shabery Beri Keutamaan Kurangkan Caj Internet

lower percentage of GST for Sabah and Sarawak

KOTA KINABALU: Implementing the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is only fair under ‘one country one price’ situation, or else people in Sabah will end up paying more than our counterparts in Peninsular Malaysia due to the higher cost of goods here.

Federation of Sabah Manufacturers Association (FSM) president Datuk Seri Panglima Wong Khen Thau suggested the government impose a lower percentage of GST for Sabah and Sarawak if they decided to implement the proposal.

Wong pointed out that the goods in Sabah were 20 to 30 per cent more expensive than the peninsula, thus the seven per cent GST paid would certainly be higher than our West Malaysian counterparts.

Furthermore, people in the Interior will suffer more as the goods there were more expensive, he said when contacted yesterday.

If the government really wants to implement the GST, Wong suggested the government impose seven per cent in Kuala Lumpur, four to five per cent in Sabah and probably three percent in the Interior.

He said implementing GST of seven per cent would rake in an additional income of up to RM27 billion for the government, as stated by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Idris Jala.

He said it was implemented in most developed countries.

“But Malaysia is a third world country, it will only be fair if we have ‘one country one price’, like Singapore and Australia.”

In this respect, Wong pointed out that the government has to balance the price differentials between Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and the rural areas. He said it was a good policy so that people could not evade tax but it had to be fair to everyone.

Whilst the GST would affect consumers, Wong said it would indirectly be good for manufacturers or some in the business community as manufacturers no longer had to pay sales tax.

Wong added that it was not known yet how the government would implement the GST or whether there would be differential in percentage. However, FSM had submitted a memo to the government some time ago highlighting the issues affecting Sabah as well as suggesting recommendations.

Abdul Rahman wants more homes to be affordable

Kota Kinabalu: More affordable homes for Malaysians everywhere is among the priorities of Datuk Dahlan, the Minister of the renamed Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Ministry.

"Our concern is to see these housing projects take off and completed without any hitches," he said.

The Ministry is a merger of two previous ministries Housing and Local Government Ministry and the Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Ministry (FT).  Abdul Rahman, who is Kota Belud MP and Sabah Barisan Nasional secretary, said another of his concerns was improving solid waste management nationwide.

"We need to look into this and work it out with the various states as well as the stakeholders," said Abdul Rahman, adding that he needs to convince certain states of the necessity to collaborate with the Federal Government on this issue.

He said his Ministry will also be looking into issues of poverty and will be working with related ministries in tackling the problem. Meanwhile, his colleague Energy Minister Datuk Dr Max Ongkili would look at long-term planning for the provision of water and electricity.

"We will do whatever is necessary to address this matter," Dr Maximus, who is Kota Marudu MP, said.

Sufficient water supply was among the key concerns in Sabah. He said his Ministry would find ways to work closely with the state government on the matter. He added that his Ministry would also work on long term solutions for Sabah's power supply.

"This will have to involve the government, private sector and various groups," Dr Maximus said, adding that state officials would brief him about Sabah's power supply next week.

Meanwhile, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Joseph Kurup said he was fully prepared to carry out duties assigned to him by the Prime Minister. For the time being, however, the Pensiangan MP said he was drawing up immediate, medium and long-term plans for his remote constituency of less than 100,000 people.

"We are looking at a plan of action for the next 100 days and over the long-term," he said.

He also added that the Pensiangan folk want more infrastructure such as roads, clinics and schools.

INFO: Driving licence similar to MyKad from August

KOTA KINABALU: The Road Transport Department (RTD) will issue a competent driving licence (CDL) which is similar to the MyKad, beginning this August.

Its director-general Datuk Ismail Ahmad said the initiative was a continuous transformation by the department to improve the quality and durability of drivers’ licences.

He said the move was aimed at addressing problems raised by licence owners, including forging and the quality of current driving licences.

“The introduction of the new design will see a couple of safety features which are not easy to duplicate as well as quality and durability of the card.

“The public who will be renewing their driving licences in August will be the first batch to receive this new CDL card,” he said at a recent meet the public event at the RTD complex in Bundusan.

Also present was Sabah RTD director Mohd Shuhaili Mohd Taufek.

According to Ismail, existing licence card holders are not required to change to the new card, but may do so for security purposes.

“All the security features of the new driving licence card is similar to the present MyKad,” he said.

Meanwhile, Ismail said RTD had also launched the Malaysian Vocational Licence (MVL), which combines three types of licence into a single licence, namely Public Service Vehicle (PSV), Goods Driving Licence (GDL) and Conductor Licence (CL).

He said through this new system, MVL holder only needs to pay RM20 for all the three licences, compared to RM20 for each licence previously.

“This will benefit more than 149,909 vocational licence holders who have both the PSV and GDL licences,” said Ismail.

Look at yourself first before accusing

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Democratic Action Party (DAP) should look in the mirror before making baseless allegations and accusing Barisan Nasional (BN) of being racist.

Sabah Umno Wanita assistant secretary Datuk Jainab Ahmad said it was shameful that DAP was still continuing with its cheap tactic of playing on racial sentiments and trying to disunite the people of Sabah in its quest to gain power.

“In the first place, the people know that we in BN stood for the election under one ticket and not based on race or individual component parties. This is unlike the opposition pact Pakatan Rakyat (PR); they are not even in power but they already could not unite under one logo.

“Secondly, before it accuses BN, why doesn’t DAP look at its own PR governments in Penang, Selangor and Kelantan? Even they have their own quota. In BN, whoever is the minister or assistant minister, our role is to serve the rakyat as a whole,” said Jainab.

The Karambunai assemblywoman was commenting on recent remarks by Sabah DAP assistant secretary cum Likas assemblyman Junz Wong who said Sabah BN leadership appeared to be marginalizing the Chinese community.

Junz had questioned if Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman purposely reduced the number of Chinese representation in the state cabinet to punish the community for backing the opposition in the 13th general election.

Jainab, who has been promoted to Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister under the new cabinet line-up, said both the Prime Minister and Chief Minister had taken conciliatory and dignified tones on the issue of the Chinese representation.

“They tell all the YBs to work and serve the rakyat and fulfil the promises made by BN, because our manifesto is a promise, ‘Aku Janji.’ The opposition on the other hand said their manifesto is just

a manifesto, not a promise that must be kept.

“I sincerely hope the people, young and old, know how to differentiate what is right and not be suck in by the lies and hatred the opposition continuously gives to them, especially through the Internet,” she said.

BN managed to retain power after securing a simple majority in the highly anticipated GE13, which saw a further decrease in the number of seats the coalition has in parliament.

The state BN government started a new term with only two ethnic Chinese in its federal cabinet after both MCA and Gerakan, who recorded their worst ever election performance on May 5, decided not to take up any ministerial or other posts.

In Sabah, BN maintained its overwhelming dominance, despite losing a higher number of seats to PR.

DAP took a swing at the state BN leadership after it appointed only two ethnic Chinese as full ministers in its state cabinet, as compared to three in the previous term.

Jainab, as well as another Sabah Umno leader Datuk Bolkiah Ismail, rejected DAP’s accusation as baseless and a mere attempt to gain political mileage.

“In Semenanjung, even when MCA did not want to be appointed, the PM said BN serves all irrespective of race or religious background. The decrease in Chinese representation is a non issue.

“My advise to DAP is to stop politicising matters we are not interested in. We want to work but they are only interested in pointing fingers and complaining, not resolving issues. It is BN’s YBs who resolve issues faced by the people.

“What I see is that when people want their problems solved, they go to BN because they know only BN has the sincerity and political will to bring about real changes. Sadly however, some of them turn around and voted along racial lines comes the election, rejecting BN when it was us who seriously worked for them,” she said.

Lebih 30 Pemimpin Sabah Sertai Kabinet Persekutuan Jika PKR Memerintah?

MANTAN Calon Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Parlimen Tenom (2008) Adris Taripin, menyifatkan perlantikan enam pemimpin daripada Sabah membarisi kabinet Persekutuan suatu keputusan yang bijaksana setakat ini; namun berpendapat masyarakat Murut berada di persimpangan jalan setelah Kabinet Malaysia meminggirkan pemimpin yang mereka pilih melalui PRU-13. Perlantikan tiga pemimpin KDM ke dalam Kabinet Persekutuan iaitu Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili, Tan Sri Joseph Kurup dan Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin tidak boleh disifatkan mewakili masyarakat Murut, sekalipun dalam rumpun KDM. - SABAHKINI
