STAR kutuk Huguan Siou Anwar Ibrahim

  10. A move by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Ranau to bestow the title ‘Huguan Siou of Malaysia’ upon Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim has prompted critics to accuse Anwar and his party of insulting the Kadazandusun community and further jeopardising the Opposition’s chances in Sabah.

    1. Photos of Anwar wearing a sash that read ‘Huguan Siou Malaysia’, posted on Facebook by Ranau PKR chief Jonathan Yasin, elicited angry reactions on Facebook, “with most of them expressing their disapproval and disgust against such an act which they deemed a gross insult to the Kadazan Dusun community”.

    2. Kadazandusun leaders called the move “illogical, insulting, disrespectful and an act of desperation”. ‘Huguan Siou’ means ‘Paramount Leader’ and is, according to the Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA), a “near sacred” title which is only bestowed by the KDCA.

    3. Those facts were not lost on a blogger who writes under the name John F SeaDemon, who said:

“So, where does Pakatan Rakyat or PKR plan to throw Joseph Pairin Kitingan, the incumbent Huguan Siou? Does PKR now want to replace the Kadazandusun Cultural Association by usurping the latter’s power and appoint a Huguan Siou who is not from the KDM community?”

    4. SeaDemon also wrote:

“I guess this is how Pakatan Rakyat treat the people of Sabah. Whatever goes as long as Pakatan Rakyat forms a government, gains power, and Anwar achieves his life-long ambition of becoming the Prime Minister of Malaysia. I won’t be surprised Sarawak would receive the same treatment. Who cares about local sensitivities or what the locals want?”

  11. The blogger also pointed out the added significance of the ‘Huguan Siou Malaysia’ title bestowed upon Anwar, saying it means Anwar would be the “Paramaount Ruler of Malaysia”, replacing His Majesty Yang DiPertuan Agong.

    1. Another blogger, Stop the Lies, also criticised the move, saying:

“We know Anwar Ibrahim has always wanted to be the King of Kings. To be the PM, even if it means doing a deal with the Devil, he will do it. It is his ultimate aim. He will pawn away Malaysia.

    2. “Now, he wants to be the Huguan Siou – the paramount chief of the Kadazans! So much for his promise of more native rights and autonomy for Sabah, this serial adulterer has even taken over the native chief!”

    3. Blogger Hantu Laut wondered how Anwar could even be considered for the title considering he is not even eligible by ethnicity:

“First and foremost he is not a Kadazan and not a drop of the DNA in his blood, nor the praxis, and not a Sabahan. He can't even qualify on the "one drop rule" because he ain't got any.”

    4. “This will probably rile up the Kadazan to vote against PKR. In their over zealousness to condescend they have broken the tribal convention, only the Kadazan peoples can appoint their HOGUAN SIOU,” he said.

  12. Democratic Action Party (DAP) Parliamentary Leader Lim Kit Siang tweeted a denial on behalf of Anwar, saying: “Circulating in Sabah Anwar is Huguan Siou Msia. Phoned Anwar from KK about it. Anwar denied as he knew nothing abt it. No such announcement.”

    2. Other Twitter users were quick to point out to Lim that the damage was already done, such as Philip Golingai, who tweeted: “Instead of taking Anwar's words, check FB posting of Jonathan Yasin, Ranau PKR chief. Or check with your Kadazan Dap leaders.”

    3. Blogger SeaDemon said that in the face of photographic evidence, Lim and Anwar lied about the event and were “trying to hoodwink the Sabahans for their support in the forthcoming general elections”.

    4. “Anwar may have denied the event took place, but Jonathan Yasin has not issued any denial. In fact, he was reported to have blamed it on an ex-tribal chief whom had performed the ceremony – the blame game commences,”

    5. “There is no question that the event did take place, and it is perhaps the ultimate insult by a Peninsula-based party in its attempt to subjugate the people of Sabah.”

  13. The Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA) has demanded apologies from the Ranau PKR division and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim over the conferment of the "Huguan Siou" title to the PKR adviser.

  14. Its secretary-general Suman Yasambun said the Huguan Siou or paramount chief title was exclusively reserved for a Kadazandusun Murut leader, and culturally inappropriate and illegal to be bestowed on a non-Kadazandusun Murut.

  15. "It has insulted and hurt the feelings of the Kadazandusun community. In fact, it is an act that will bring the curse upon a person or persons who usurp the leadership structure within the Kadazandusun community, especially in relation to the institution of Huguan Siou," he said in a statement Wednesday.

  16. Suman said "Huguan Siou" was an institution that embodied the community's spirit of unity, courage and self-determination.

  17. State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun said the title was sacred to the Kadazadusun Murut community and should only bestowed on those from the community.

    ReplyDelete
  18. He said the person who bestowed the title was probably trying to gain political mileage and it was unbecoming of Anwar to accept it for he had been in politics and government for years.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Masidi said any action deemed to belittle the Huguan Siou institution would undermine Sabah's cultural heritage and that political agenda should not override the interests of Sabahans.

  20. United Sabah Bajau Organisation president Datuk Seri Salleh Said Keruak said the "Huguan Siou" saga showed that Anwar was ignorant of the cultures of the various ethnic groups in Sabah in his quest for power.

    ReplyDelete
  21. "He has insulted Sabahans. How do we expect Sabahans to trust him?" he said.

  22. Liberal Democratic Party president Datuk V.K. Liew said there was only one "Huguan Siou" in Sabah, namely Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
