Yee in five-cornered fight will retain Api-Api

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) deputy president Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai will face a tough battle in defending the N. 15 Api-Api state seat in a five-cornered fight in the 13th general election.

Yee, 57, who has consecutively been elected as Api-Api state assemblyman three times since 1999, will be contesting against Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Liew Chin Jin @ Christina Liew, Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) Datuk Wong Yit Ming, State Reform Party Sabah Chapter (STAR) Dr Felix Chong Kat Fah and independent candidate Marcel Jude Joseph in the state constituency.

“This is a tough battle. I need to face many opposition parties who are attacking from all sides.

“I hope the voters will have the intelligence when casting their votes for us to continue to serve the people for a more prosperous society and nation,” he said in an interview after the nomination at Dewan Maksak here, yesterday.

Yee’s nomination was proposed by Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry vice president Datuk William Chu Fui Khin, 65, and seconded by Kota Kinabalu Basketball Association chairman Fung Chun Fatt.

Yee was elected as the MP for Tanjong Aru for two terms, from 1995-2004, the MP of Kota Kinabalu from 2004-2008, and Api-Api state assemblyman for three terms, from 1999-2013.

He has been the deputy president of PBS since 1994.

Yee has five children, including three sons and two daughters with his spouse Datin Lai Nyat Yin.

His working experience includes being a medical doctor in various hospitals while in the UK prior to returning to Sabah, serving at the Medical Practitioners Defence Society and Medical Protection Society of London UK, lawyer at Messrs. Dr Yee Tan & Associates, Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology since 2004, and Deputy Chief Minister of Sabah since April 2011.

His academic background includes a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from University of Wales College of Medicine in United Kingdom (UK), Bachelor of Laws (Hons) LLB (Hons) from University of Wales College of Wales in UK and Barrister at Law from Lincoln’s Inn in UK.

He was also the Founding Fellow of the Faculty of Legal and Forensic Medicine at the Royal College of Physicians UK, and was admitted on February 18, 1992 as the advocate and solicitor of the High Court in Sabah and Sarawak.

In addition, Yee achieved Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian Awards (JCI TOYM) in 1995.
